Local Committee Meeting for Student Council

On Tuesday the 9th of December, Student Council members Ella Mae Cruz, Stephanie Daly and Elaine Robertson went with Mr. Kerr and Ms. Cahill to Mount Carmel Secondary School to attend a local commitee meeting to discuss the possibility of giving awards to people in the local community good deeds and overcoming difficulties in their lives.
We arrived to the hall, had something to eat and a drink and then the meeting started. We could pick our own groups, we ended up in a group with four girls from other schools and two men from the community and Ms. Cahill. We discussed who we were going to give the awards to, how much it would cost and when we should do it.
A woman named Aga came and discussed racism and new-comers to our community and friendship. She gave us a large folder full of information.
"It was an honour to be there", says Ella Mae. "We felt like adults", says Stephanie, "because there was other adults there, and boys, we were asked questions and expected to answer like adults". "People took it very seriously and this made us feel more like adults", said Ella Mae.
This meeting will happen again in February, we can't wait!

Fighting Words

On Monday morning we set off for Russell St, near Croke Park. As we were walking, a man slipped and fell on the ice. We laughed, he was embarrassed. At first, when we arrived we had our photo taken and name tags. We walked through a shelf that turned. Rossa was the name of the man who helped us write our story, our whole class together. We were making up ideas and voting, we had to close our eyes when we voted, and if we got caught looking, the two ladies working there would hit us with a foam finger!
There was a hidden man (Mr. McConkey) who didn't think children could write stories, but he was wrong!!
We came up with the characters of the story and Elaine and Kellie came up with the name 'The Adventures of Harold the Pig'. Sarah, who had a laptop and projector typed the story as we dictated it to her. Brenda was an artist, who drew illustrations to the story as we went along, we were all amazed. When we got half way through the story, we had to finish it ourselves in groups of four. We all enjoyed the process and the end product. We showed the finished piece to Mr. McConkey and he turned our work into a book for each of us. When we got our books, we each had our picture on the back. It was a great experience, we would reccomend it to our friends. It was a unique way of writing a story and we had a few hours out of school!

5th and 6th Class went to the library and met an author, who wrote many books about Ethiopia in Africa.
